Math Our goal is for all Rainier Scholars to possess a beginning-level algebra proficiency at the conclusion of the Academic Program. Research demonstrates that algebra serves as a significant gatekeeper to college-prep level courses in secondary school, and we work to ensure that this barrier is surmountable for our scholars. Using a combination of traditional math (skill and drill, numbers sense, rote memorization of math facts) and math in context (critical thinking, hands-on math, practical problem solving, math in everyday life), scholars learn to approach math from a variety of perspectives. In addition to regular Math classes at Rainier Scholars, one-on-one math instruction occurs twice weekly during the summer, enabling instructors to personalize teaching based on the needs of each student. Core math skills covered over the 14-month Academic Program include but are not limited to: • fractions, decimals and percents A variety of materials are used to develop our curriculum, but two central resources include the Math in Context series as well as the Connected Math series. |
