How to Apply – Tacoma
Rainier Scholars – Tacoma is a great fit for students who demonstrate curiosity, enjoy challenges and love to learn new things!
We are looking for students who have a strong desire to go to college. Our selection process seeks to identify families who stand to benefit the most from the services and resources we provide. We focus our recruitment efforts in Title 1 schools in the greater South Sound region.
Eligibility criteria
- Currently enrolled in 4th grade in Tacoma Public Schools or a surrounding district.
- At, approaching, or above grade level in reading and math.
- Loves to learn.
- Are looking to be part of a community of curious, motivated, and supportive peers.
In addition, our program looks for families with the greatest need (those with limited income, minimal experience navigating higher education pathways, and/or other significant barriers to college graduation) to apply.
Families must demonstrate a commitment to the long-term work of developing the skills and habits required to obtain a college degree in service of maximizing their choices and opportunities.
Steps to Apply
Step 1
Fill out an inquiry form so we can learn a little about your student and determine if you’re eligible to apply.
Step 2
(December-January)
Attend a family info meeting to learn more about the program and determine if Rainier Scholars is a fit for your student.
Step 3
(December-January)
Complete an online application form.
Step 4
(February – March)
Applicants invited to Round 2 submit additional application materials and participate in in-person assessments including student interviews.
Step 5
(March-April)
Staff reviews applications and notifies selected students by the week of May 1.

Are you a teacher or community member who knows a 4th grader who might be a good fit?

October – November
Nominations
Nominations for Cohort 5 open. Click here to nominate a student. If you are the parent/guardian of the student, please fill out this Inquiry Form instead.
December – January
Information meetings begin. Families must attend an information meeting to apply. Virtual and In-person options available.
February
Applications Close
Applications close February 2, 2026. February 10, Applicants invited to Round 2 submit additional application materials and participate in in-person assessments including student interviews.
February – March
Student applicants participate in “Live” Applications Stations, parents/guardians submit a survey and income verification, and student recommendations are collected.
March – April
Final Selection
Rainier Scholars staff review all materials and make final decisions. Up to 50 students are invited to be part of Cohort 5.
May
The week of May 1st, Cohort 5 will be announced.
