ACADEMIC COUNSELING AND SUPPORT SERVICES
Stepping up to academic excellence in middle school
Each year, approximately 98% of our scholars earn placement in college preparatory settings in private schools and public schools offering advanced learning programs. To help them thrive in these academically rigorous settings, we provide ongoing academic and socio-emotional support. This support includes monthly one-on-one meetings with their academic counselor at their school, grade level skill building workshops, as well as ongoing academic enrichment and STEM opportunities.
During middle school, we encourage our scholars to apply the many skills and tools learned during the 14-month Academic Enrichment phase as they continue to strive towards academic excellence as self-motivated and self-advocating learners.
We are grateful for the countless school partnerships it takes to fulfill our mission.
The academic counselor is an advocate for the scholar, a liaison between the school and the family. They are a personal coach who pays close attention to all academic and non-academic matters that could impact a student’s success in school. In addition to monthly one-on-one meetings, academic counselors organize social outings, school community lunches and follow-up meetings if a scholar is struggling.
Because we recognize that a child’s education impacts the whole household, we also partner with families to advocate for our scholars in school and link them with any necessary support services.
“Rainier Scholars helped me get organized when I started at a new school, giving me tips that are really paying off.”
Adriana Hernandez, Cohort XIV, Seattle Girls’ School
Enrichment classes and workshops
Our middle school scholars participate in topical workshops throughout the year where they apply the tools and the skills they have learned in the Academic Enrichment phase of the program. They are also given the opportunity to learn new skills, including computer programming.
Saturday events and retreats
Twice a month, scholars go on group field trips. These trips allow them to stay engaged in the Rainier Scholars community. Retreats include time for students to set new academic goals and participate in workshops on grade-specific topics, as well as explore options for high school.
Our middle school scholars’ parents also attend workshops to help build a supportive network, plan for high school and continue their own education as parents of budding adolescents.

Summer learning opportunities
We encourage our middle school scholars to participate in summer enrichment opportunities that have the added benefit of helping to prevent the classic “summer slide” that is too often prevalent for low-income students. See a few of the opportunities available to our scholars.
